Graduate Non-degree seeking students are not eligible for any federal student loan funds

Graduate degree seeking students taking undergraduate units, who are not enrolled in at least 5 units of graduate level course work, are not eligible for disbursements of any graduate level student loan funds.

Three Steps to Success

If you completed a Grad PLUS MPN for the first time for loans in 2010-2011, you do not need a new MPN.

You will need to complete a new MPN for 2012-2013 if:

  • You are a new UA student
  • You are a first time Federal Direct Graduate PLUS loan borrower at the UA
  • You were required to have an endorser for 2011-2012 due to adverse credit. A MPN with an endorser is only valid for one loan.
  • Log into UAccess Student Center
  • Look for Finances and then find Financial Aid
  • Click Accept/Decline Awards
  • Click the applicable school year (2012-2013) and accept loans

Confirm Approval to Pay Charges

All students who did not attend UA in Fall 2011/ Spring 2012/ Summer 2012 must confirm permission for UA to pay charges other than Tuition and mandatory fees with their federal student aid (Grants, and student loans)

Find UAccess Student and click Student Center

  1. Log in to Student Center
  2. Look for Finances and then find Financial Aid
  3. Click Financial Aid Authorization
  • No action is needed for loans you wish to decline.
  • Only the loans and amounts you accept will be processed
  • Be sure to enter the loans and amounts needed for the entire school (Fall/Spring) year.
  • Be aware of how loans are reported to credit agencies. You should not request loans multiple times as your credit score may be affected.
  • Interest is only charged on the loan amount disbursed, so accepting fall and spring amounts all at once will not accrue more interest.
  • Students are not required to borrow and may borrow less than the amount offered. Borrowers can also decide to cancel a loan and have funds returned to the lender. Be aware, students will be required to repay any account balance when a disbursed loan is canceled.

Protect Your Credit!

Be sure to identify yourself as a Graduate student.

You must complete loan entrance counseling with the U.S. Department of Education.if:

  • You are a first time Federal Direct borrower at the UA
  • You are a first time borrower at the Graduate Level (undergraduate students moving to graduate).

Credit Approval Required

Approval of the Graduate PLUS Loan is subject to a credit check by the U.S. Department of Education (ED). The Federal Graduate PLUS Loan will only be denied for Adverse Credit reasons. If you do not have Adverse Credit, you will be approved.  Per the ED, these are the conditions for a Denied Credit Check:
  • Bankruptcy (Chapters 7, 11, or 12 within the past 5 years)
Note: Department Policy does not consider Chapter 13 bankruptcy adverse.
  • Voluntary surrender within the last 5 years
  • Repossession within the last 5 years
  • Foreclosure proceedings started
  • Foreclosure within the last 5 years
  • Deed in lieu of foreclosure
  • Accounts currently 90 days or more delinquent
Note: Accounts currently reported, as 90 days or more delinquent, which are over 5 years old since the last reported delinquency, are not considered adverse.
  • Wage garnishment within the last 5 years
  • Defaulted loan that has been claim paid
  • Lease or contract on secured real estate
  • County/State/Federal tax lien, within the past 5 years

See the Federal Trade Commission web site for free credit reports

If Denied, what are the Options?

  • Appeal the adverse credit decision with the Direct Loan Applicant Service Center at 1.800.557.7394
  • Obtain a credit worthy endorser. Be aware, that once a borrower is denied it's most likely they would continue to be denied each year for the next five years. Denied borrowers should be prepared to secure an endorser who can endorse the Graduate PLUS until the degree is completed.
    • The endorser must obtain a Federal PIN
    • Endorser must sign in and endorse the loan
    • Click Endorse a Direct PLUS Loan
    • Enter the Loan Reference Number that UA will provide you via your UA email account
