Loan Entrance & PLUS Counseling For Federal Direct Loans

Parents: Do not complete this step for your student!

Who Needs Loan Entrance Counseling

  • First time undergraduate student borrowers
  • First time graduate student borrowers
  • Graduate students who borrowed as undergraduate students. The undergraduate loan counseling is not valid for the graduate level.

The student will be notified by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to complete the PLUS counseling session on http://studentloans.gov. When completed, ED will send UA a confirmation that the counseling session is complete. It typically takes 3-5 business days for UA to electronically receive this confirmation. A paper confirmation form should not be sent to UA.

The student must complete the counseling sessions in one sitting as there is not an option to save the session and return later.

  • Sign In to http://studentloans.gov using your FAFSA PIN.
  • Select “Complete Entrance Counseling”.
  • Select your grade level. (Undergraduate or Graduate/Professional)
  • Complete the session/quiz.
  • Keep a copy of your completion for your records. Do not send to UA unless requested.

Before you accept a Loan:

  • Develop an employment plan. While getting your degree from UA, try to establish a network of professional contacts. This network could make job hunting or starting your own business more successful. For salaries in your career field,  visit http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes_nat.htm.
  • Develop a long-term educational financial plan while you complete your degree. Your plan may need to include both federal and private student loans.
  • Develop an academic plan that is consistent with your long-term financial plan. Before you pay for tuition, housing or your ZonaZoo Pass, develop a written academic plan that outlines every class you will take until graduation.
  • Develop a budget plan for the things you need and want. Then, list items you can do without during school to reduce your costs. (For example, you could reduce your overall student loan debt by choosing a more affordable cell phone plan).
