Federal Direct Loans

Special Instructions For All Loans

Important Notes:

 

  •  2017-2018 Availability: 2017-2018 Federal Direct Loans will be available for acceptance in mid-July. Due to early class start dates, the College of Medicine financial aid office will advise medical students separately about when they may accept their loans.
  • Browser Configuration:  Browser pop-ups must be enabled in order to complete the loan acceptance process.
  • Legal Name and SSNs: Students and parents must use their legal name and social security number as they appear on their social security card for all loan documents.
  • Guest Access privileges in the UAccess Student Center are necessary for parents to accept and monitor the processing and disbursement Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loans.
  • Two Equal Disbursements:  All loans are academic year loans and are divided into two equal disbursements paid to the student, half in the fall term and half in the spring term.
  • Fall to Spring Grade Level Advances: Increased loan eligibility is available for those students who advance to the sophomore or junior grade level at the end of their fall term. Students must self-identify by contacting our office at the start of the spring term.
  • 2017-2018 Disbursement Deadline: The first installment of all 2017-2018 federal student and parent loans must be disbursed before October 1, 2017. In the event that the first installment of a 2017-2018 federal student or parent loan does not disburse before October 1, 2017, the loan will be invalid and you will be required to re-apply for the loan.

Special Note: Time limitations apply to Federal Direct Subsidized Loan Eligibility for First-Time Borrowers on or after July 1, 2013.

Important Dates: Federal Direct Loans accepted after the following priority deadlines may not be processed. 

 

Fall 2017 - Spring 2018:

  • Students must accept Federal Direct Loans before the end of the academic term for which they are registered. Parents also must accept the PLUS loan before the end of the academic term for which their student is registered. If students are not registered for the spring term, their federal loans must be accepted and processed before the end of the fall term.
  • August 10, 2017 is the deadline to enroll in Web Refund for direct deposit in order to receive refunds to your bank account for aid disbursed for the Fall 2017 term.
  • September 30, 2017 is the deadline to have the first half of all federal student loans posted to your student account (disbursed) before the loan origination fees change on October 1, 2017. This origination fee change will render any un-disbursed student loan invalid if the first half of the loan was not disbursed to you (posted to your account) before the change in fees take effect.
  • December 14, 2017 is the final date to accept loans for December 2017 graduates and students not enrolled in UA courses for Spring 2018. Any loans accepted after December 12th are subject to cancelation without notice or consent.
  • December 29, 2017 is the deadline to enroll in Web Refund for direct deposit in order to receive refunds to your bank account for aid disbursed for the Spring 2018 term.
  • May 10, 2018 is the deadline to accept 2017-2018 Federal Direct Loans for students enrolled in Spring 2018.
  • September 30, 2017: The Federal Direct Perkins Loan program will be terminated, all Perkins loans must be accepted and disbursed by this date. If funds have not disbursed by September 30 the loan will be canceled.

Loan Acceptance Instructions:

Freshmen and Undergraduate Students

Student loans will be available in July for students who:
  • Have filed the FAFSA and been awarded Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans
  • Meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards for financial aid
  • Do not have outstanding "To Do" items in UAccess
Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans-Click Here
  • Undergraduate degree seeking students must be enrolled in undergraduate level courses to receive federal student loans. (at least 6 units as half-time)
  • Non-degree seeking students are not eligible for federal student loans

Graduate/Professional Students

Student Loans will be available to accept in July for students who:
  • Have filed the FAFSA and been awarded Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans
  • Meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards for financial aid
  • Do not have outstanding "To Do" items in UAccess
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans
  • Graduate degree seeking students enrolled at least half time (5 units) in graduate level courses
  • Non-degree seeking students are not eligible for federal student loan funds*

Parents

Accept Your Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan Here (Credit Check is required)
  • Parent must have Guest Access to accept Parent PLUS loan
  • Student must have been awarded the Parent PLUS loan
  • All  “To Do” items in the student’s UAccess Student Center must be resolved

Other Federal, State, University or Private Education Loans

Other Federal, State or University Educational Loans

Other loans (Noyce, Deaf and Blind, Nursing, Pharmacy, etc) are made available in July for students who:

  • Have been awarded the applicable federal, state, or university loans
  • Meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards for financial aid
  • Do not have outstanding "To Do" items in UAccess
Federal Perkins Loan
  • Federal Perkins Loan Program is ending September 30, 2017.  Students will need to ensure that all requirements are completed at least 2 weeks before that deadline.

Private Educational Loans 
  • Private Educational Loans are not part of the Federal Direct Student Loan Program. These are credit-based loans a student can apply for when other aid is not sufficient to cover all educational expenses. A co-signer may be required/preferred for undergraduate borrowers.
