College of Nursing Financial Aid

College of Nursing Financial Aid

The University of Arizona College of Nursing and Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid strive to offer a variety of financial aid opportunities to enable students to pursue an Arizona education, including the following:

All applicants must file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be considered for federal and some institutional aid options. A FAFSA is required to be completed for each academic year (fall-spring-summer). If you enroll in a program that begins in the summer, you must complete the prior year's FAFSA for summer financial aid*, as well as the upcoming year's FAFSA to be awarded for the next academic year.

The 2024-2025 FAFSA was available on December 31st; the University of Arizona 2024-2025 Priority Filing Date is May 1.  Students should submit their FAFSA by the priority filing date to ensure that they are offered their financial aid in a timely manner. Be sure to include the University of Arizona school code (001083) when you submit your FAFSA to avoid delays in the processing of your aid. For more information on how to apply for financial aid, click here.

Students should monitor their official CatMail account and UAccess Student Center for up-to-date information, as well as requests from our OSFA and other departments on campus.

Please see below for additional program-specific information.

The UA Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid is committed to supporting BSN students in their academic pursuits. UA's priority filing date for the 2024-2025 FAFSA is May 1. You are not required to apply by the priority deadline, but it is highly recommended due to the limited availability of institutional grant funds and Federal Work Study funding allocated to undergraduate students. The deadline does not apply to your eligibility for Federal Pell Grants or Federal Direct Loans.

For additional information about financial aid offered to undergraduate-level students, please visit http://financialaid.arizona.edu/types-of-aid.

The UA Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid is committed to supporting MEPN students in their academic pursuits. As a graduate-level student, you may be eligible to receive up to $20,500 in a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan each Academic Year. See below for a sample break-down of financial aid offered to resident students in the 2024-2025 MEPN Cohort.

Please note that this information is intended to provide you with an estimate only; actual loan amounts may vary based on individual Cost of Attendance and borrowing history, among other factors. Loan amounts will also be reduced if you are awarded any scholarships or grants from the College of Nursing or other sources.

2024-2025 Academic Year:

  • $20,500 Maximum Academic Year Loan Eligibility Including Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and Summer 2025 term.

The amount may be less than $20,500 if the student borrowed federal student loans in Fall/Spring as an Undergraduate or Graduate, borrowed federal student loans at another institution within the same year, or if the Cost of Attendance is less than $20,500.

As your unsubsidized loan may not be sufficient to cover your full Cost of Attendance, we can offer you a Graduate PLUS loan, per your request, up to your remaining Cost of Attendance. For additional information regarding the Graduate PLUS loan, you may visit the Federal Student Aid Website; for information specific to UA students, click here. To request a Graduate PLUS loan, contact our office at  https://financialaid.arizona.edu/contact.

Alternatively, you may wish to pursue a Private Educational Loan with a lender of your choice. Private lenders offer varying terms and options for students, and we encourage you to research several lenders to discern which loan and lender may be the best fit for you. Visit our Private Educational Loans webpage or an overview of this loan type, questions to consider when researching lenders, and a lender comparison chart.

As the MEPN program is accelerated, we understand that most students in the program will not work while enrolled. Your income as reported on the FAFSA does not impact your eligibility for federal financial aid options at UA. Unless you expect to receive a need-based financial aid award, such as a grant, through the College of Nursing, no further action is required. If you are applying for need-based financial aid options through the College of Nursing or a 3rd party, you may complete the Student Resource Re-Evaluation located on the forms page of our website under the Forms for Students section.

The UA Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid is committed to supporting RN to MS students in their academic pursuits.

Once you accept your loan and complete the loan requirements, your funds will disburse (release) to your Bursar’s Account. You will receive a refund for the amount of your loan (minus the origination fee) after any Bursar charges have been paid. You are responsible for any additional or outstanding charges to the Outreach College during this transitional period.

Academic year disbursements begin approximately one week prior to the first day of standard classes (main campus) for the fall and spring semesters; summer disbursements begin with the first day of standard pre-session classes (main campus).

You can receive your refund in one of two ways. We recommend that you sign up for "Web Refund" in your UAccess Student Center, under the Finances section, which will allow your financial aid to be deposited directly to your designated bank account within 2-4 business days following disbursement. If you do not enroll in Web Refund, the Bursar’s Office will send a check to the mailing address you have on file with the University of Arizona. During the summer semester, financial aid may disburse after the first day of classes for the RN-MS program.

Students who have not completed a Bachelor's Degree or at least 90 college-level units

Students must have completed at least 90 college-level units in order to be eligible for graduate-level loans, per federal regulations. Students are encouraged to submit all transcripts for review during the application process. Students who have not yet completed at least 90 college-level units will be eligible for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan funding based on the following:

COLLEGE-LEVEL

(ACADEMIC YEAR: FALL-SPRING-SUMMER)

0-29 $9,500

Students who receive Graduate Assistant (GA) Benefits

If your GA Appointment is processed after the release of your financial aid, you may receive a refund. However, due to timing differences you may need to use this refund to pay a future Bursar's Account balance that results from the application of your GA tuition benefits and the reconciliation of your other financial aid.

Nursing Faculty Loan Program (NFLP)

The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) program is authorized under the Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act, Section 846A (42 U.S.C. 297n-1) to increase the number of qualified nursing faculty, and the NFLP fund is used to provide loans to students enrolled in an eligible advanced degree program in nursing (master’s or doctoral) at the school. After graduation from the advanced education nursing degree program, loan recipients may cancel up to 85 percent of the NFLP loan over a consecutive 4-year period while serving as full-time nurse faculty at a school of nursing (i.e. baccalaureate or higher degree, associate degree or diploma schools of nursing). Funding through the NFLP program is limited and requires an application.

Please see below for an overview of the NFLP process:

  1. Applying: At the University of Arizona, students complete the NFLP application directly through the College of Nursing to be considered for NFLP funding; the application is generally available in May of each year for funding during the following academic year (fall-spring-summer). Be sure to complete the application as accurately as possible in regard to your anticipated enrollment and educational expenses. Your actual enrollment will be reviewed prior to disbursement, and your funding will be reduced if you are not enrolled in the approved number of units
  2. Aid Coordination: Once applicants are selected by the College of Nursing, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) coordinates NFLP funds with other federal and institutional financial aid to ensure that each student's financial aid award remains in compliance with both federal financial aid regulations and program guidance from HRSA. This process is generally completed in early August.
  3. NFLP Awarding: Once OSFA staff have reviewed the accounts of selected applicants and made any necessary adjustments, the College of Nursing will update students' accounts to include the NFLP award. This process is generally completed in mid-August.
  4. Accepting Loan: Students may accept their NFLP funds via their UAccess Student Center in late-August/early-September
    • Log in to Student Center
    • Look for the Finances section
    • Click Accept/Decline Awards
    • Click the applicable school year and accept the loan
  5. Notifying Loan Servicer: Once the loan is accepted, a notification will be sent to the Bursar's Office, which will coordinate with ECSI, a third-party loan servicer.
  6. Completing the Master Promissory Note (MPN): ECSI will send an email to students’ UA Email Account with instructions to complete the MPN online.
  7. Confirming MPN Completion: Confirmation of a completed MPN is received by the Bursar's Office; student's accounts are manually updated to reflect completion.
  8. Release of NFLP Funds to Bursar's Account: Funds release approximately 2 weeks after completion of the MPN.

NFLP and Tuition Benefits

Per program guidance from HRSA, students who receive support from multiple aid programs may not receive NFLP funding to pay for expenses already covered by other types of aid during the same academic year. If a student receives tuition scholarships, QTR, GA Tuition Benefits, AENT, GAANN and/or any other type of tuition awards/benefits, he/she will not be eligible to receive NFLP funding to cover these expenses. If NFLP funding has already been awarded, his or her NFLP funding will be reduced. We recommend that students notify the College of Nursing and Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid once they receive confirmation of their tuition awards/benefits to avoid unexpected account balances. For additional information about NFLP program guidance, you may visit https://bhw.hrsa.gov/funding/apply-grant/faq-nflp.
