FAQ - What do I submit if my parents or I filed a tax extension?

Question
What do I submit if my parents or I filed a tax extension?
Answer

Prior-prior year tax information is needed to complete verification. The tax extension deadline falls in October, six months after taxes are due. For example, the 2024-2025 FAFSA requires 2022 tax information. The tax extension deadline for 2022 was October 1, 2023 and only students (and spouses if applicable) and parents granted an extension beyond six months may submit the following for verification:

  • a copy of the IRS’s approval of an extension beyond the automatic six-month extension for tax year 2022;
  • verification of non-filing (see non-tax filers for more information) from the IRS dated on or after October 1, 2023;
  • copies of all their W-2 forms (or equivalent) for 2022 employment income; and
  • if self-employed, a signed statement with the amounts of their AGI and U.S. income tax paid 2022.

If you or your parent were not granted an extension beyond six months, please submit a 1040 Tax Form or Tax Return Transcript for the applicable prior-prior year.
