Question
I don’t talk to my parents, how do I file the FAFSA?
Answer
If you have no contact with your parents and don’t know where they live, or you’ve left home due to an abusive situation, select “Yes” to the “Do unusual circumstances prevent the student from contacting their parents or would contacting their parents pose a risk to the student?” question on the 2024–25 FAFSA form.
You will then be allowed to complete the FAFSA and submit it without any parental information. You will be granted provisional independence, which means your Federal Pell Grant eligibility will be determined and the Student Aid Index (SAI) will be calculated. You’ll then follow up with our office to submit additional documentation and complete the processing of your FAFSA.
