Question
I completed my FAFSA and it says I have a provisional independent status. Does this mean I’m independent? What are my next steps?
Answer

Based on your answers on the FAFSA, you were able to submit your FAFSA without parental information and as a result, were given provisional independent status. This provisional independent status allowed for the calculation of a provisional SAI and aid eligibility.  However, to complete the processing of your FAFSA and be eligible for federal financial aid in 2024-2025, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will need to confirm your independent status.

Students with a provisional independent status typically fall into two situations- they are either seeking a Dependency Override or they are experiencing homelessness. If you were approved for either of these cases in past years, you can renew for 2024-2025 without submitting another appeal (unless your circumstances have changed).

Keep an eye on your Student Center To Do List for more information about these processes.
